What is Homeopathy?
Homeopathy is a holistic system of medicine. The central
philosophy is "similia similibus curantur", which translates into "like
cures like". By using a minute dose of a natural substance, which can
cause physical symptoms in crude form, the body's own healing powers are
stimulated, leading to improved health and vitality.
Symptoms are more important for Homeopathy, rather than disease
names, as these are individual to the patient and indicate the remedy
required. From a homeopathic point of view, symptoms occur on any and
all levels, physical, mental or emotional. When analysing a patient's
case all aspects of that person are taken into consideration.
Homeopathy treats the cause rather then just the effect. There is a
cause for everything, and everyone can think of something in their life
that has changed them in some way, a turning point. When analylsing your
case, a homeopath will look for a cause, or aetiology. They will create
a timeline of your history. Examples can be operations, accidents,
traumas and emotional stresses. This is one reason for the healing
crisis that some patients have experienced. As the cause is treated the
body has more vitality to over come the resulting symptoms, a patient
you will experience more energy but your ailment can be slightly
aggravated. This is short lived and so will pass quickly.
What are Homeopathic Remedies?
Remedies can be derived from any source, for example plant or
mineral. In order for a substance to become a homeopathic remedy it goes
through a process called a proving. The remedy is given to a group of
volunteers called provers and all their symptoms, as a result of the
remedy, are recorded. This information gives homeopaths the symptoms to
recognise in a patient when this particular remedy is needed.
What to expect in a Homeopathic Consultation?
An initial appointment will last 90 minutes and in this time, we
will discuss your general health, patient history, family medical
history and current state of health. The atmosphere of a homeopathic
consultation is very different from that of a GP. Discussions are
relaxed and generally informal. Before the consultation is finished, I encourage patients to ask
as many questions as possible regarding their symptoms or treatment. I
may also recommend to patients to revisit their GP for further tests to clarify symptoms and for a more precises prescription.
Acute illnesses are those which are short lived but intense and happen
occasionally. Examples include colds and flu. A cause can be easily
identified as in the case of food poisoning or getting wet before a
chill. Consultations are around 20 minutes and symptoms which the
homeopath looks for, are changes in appetite and thirst, temperature,
how restless is the patient and their general disposition during the
acute.
Chronic disorders are those which persist over a long period of time or
re-occuring acutes which return periodically, for example, arthritis.
Appointments are longer as the patient and family history has to be
taken.
What is a Kinesiology Muscle Test?
For some cases, consultations may also include a kinesiology muscle test to identify possible underlying weaknesses, allergies or toxins in the body. This test is non-invasive and involves applying slight pressure on a patients hand while testing for certain substances.
